Off the Cuff: Corum’s Golden Bridge on the wrist

It isn’t every day one gets to truly enjoy the beauty of time and space, but wearing this Corum Golden Bridge rose gold timepiece I got to do just that. A marvelous piece of art and technology, the $54,700 watch is created in a limited edition of 600 pieces. While not a true watchmaking complication in the strictest sense of the word, it is a superb complexity thanks to the linear construction of the floating baguette movement. The vertical bridge holds each of the hundreds of tiny barrels, wheels, plates and pinions in a row, while the sapphire case back, dial and even case sides allow for an unobstructed view. It’s mesmerizing to look at while on the wrist, and off – and is a real eye catcher with the in-line caliber that seems to be floating in space. The crown is strategically placed on top of the watch case so as not to obstruct any view. It’s a keeper.

Time Capsules: Product—Longines Unveils 180th Anniversary Chronographs

By Samantha Walsh

To celebrate its 180th anniversary, Longines has released two new high-function watch models: the Longines Telemeter Chronograph and Longines Tachymeter Chronograph – each offering performance and elegance.

The Longines Telemeter Chronograph has a white lacquered dial with a red telemeter scale on the dial that was inspired by a 1933 timepiece. Telemeter scales were initially introduced around 1852 to measure the distance travelled by sound.  The 41mm steel watch houses the caliber L688 self-winding chronograph movement, whose workmanship is visible via a sapphire caseback.  Similarly, the  Longines Tachymeter Chronograph with white lacquered dial also house the L688 column-wheel chronograph movement, but offers a tachymeter scale in blue and red on the dial, which was inspired by a Longines  watch developed in 1934.

These watches are timelessly elegant yet modern and sporty. Each retails for $3,250 – a great price for the Swiss-made beauties that look great on the wrist and offer technical prowess.

Off the Cuff: Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph

The iconic Royal Oak collection of timepieces from Audemars Piguet celebrates its 40th anniversary this year with much fanfare – including an entire new series of Royal Oak watches. The Royal Oak – designed virtually overnight by Gerald Genta for Audemars Piguet in 1972 – was the world’s first bold luxury sporty watch built in stainless steel. The watch, with its crisp design and big price point (for a steel watch) – was an immediate success. Today, the Royal Oak continues to steal hearts. This stunning chronograph houses the self-winding caliber 2385 and offers chronograph counters, hours, minutes and small seconds, as well as date indication. The silvered dial features the brand’s Grande Tapisserie pattern for an elegant appeal against the 18-karat rose gold case and hand-stitched large square-scale brown crocodile strap. The sapphire crystal is anti-reflective treatment and the watch features a screw-locked crown so it is water resistant to 50 meters.  A true eye catcher, this beauty retails for about $45,500.

Trend Report: Purple Reign: A Look at Lavender Watches

By Roberta Naas

The color purple has a flinty little mollusk to thank for its expensive reputation. In the past, extracting dye from this sea creature was such a costly and time-consuming process, only royal purses could stretch to such extravagance. Technology has democratized the shade of sovereigns, but our view of the hue is that it’s still high-end. Design houses such as Marc Jacobs, Dior, and Victoria Beckham have been playing with purple for a couple of seasons, and now it’s the most sought-after shade of summer. When partnered with quality watchmaking, the result is a sophisticated statement that exudes power, with a playful undercurrent.

The Ritmo Mundo Persepolis Dual Time Swiss Quartz Model 204/3 Multi Gem watch ($11,000) has a 44mm round stainless steel orbital case. Set with diamonds and multicolored gemstones. The dial turns over to offer an alternate display. Omega’s Constellation Quartz 35mm watch ($4,400) sparkles with features such as diamond markers on the purple dial, and date indication at 6:00.The Octea Chrono ($900) from Swarovski features a 40mm stainless steel case with a clear crystal bezel. The violet sunray dial features chronograph sub dials and LumiNova indexes, and the purple rubber strap has six amethyst DTL crystals. (This article appeared recently in LA Confidential Magazine)
