Weekend Sojourn: Breast Cancer Awareness Month — Think Pink and Be Positive
October is breast cancer awareness month, and today, more and more jewelry and watch designers support the cause with creative designs and charitable donations. What’s more, savvy consumers are happy to don the colors and stand up for those they love who have fought and are fighting this battle. Herein are a few brands that join the cause, and whom you can be proud to wear. Your purchase translates to a donation to a breast cancer cure. For instance, Coach Watches creates a special 2011 Coach Phoebe Breast Cancer Awareness watch that features a Coach Heritage logo bezel in pink enamel, and the bangle sports a detachable Coach logo charm etched with the Breast Cancer ribbon motif. Coach is donating 20 percent of the proceeds of sales of the $298 watch to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Similarly, Movado has created the Movado BOLD Breast Cancer Awareness Watch 2011 in black composite with signature dot of pink crystals and a berry ring and hands . With every $350 watch sale, Movado is donating $50 to
David Yurmanthe Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The caseback is etched with the Breast Cancer ribbon motif.
In terms of jewelry, designer David Yurman offers a beautiful pink chalcedony and pearl bracelet called the Spiritual Bead Bracelet that retails for $375 and is on sale at David Yurman boutiques with a portion of all proceeds benefitting the Breast Cancer Research Fund. Swarovski offers its Pink Hope collection to celebrate its support of The Libby Ross Breast Cancer Foundation and their Pose for Pink Yoga program, which offers free yoga classes to breast cancer patients and survivors. Swarovski’s breast cancer awareness collection includes the Pink Hope pin, charm and pendant ($55-$65). So if you want to support this cause, there’s a wonderful way to do it and still end up with a beautiful, wearable statement.
Time Capsules: Ice Watches can be Cool Watches for Fashion Fun
We don’t often show the fashion, fun watches here because we really like to focus on those important timepieces that have a heart and soul as well as heritage and craftsmanship. But every once in a while, we have to show a little fashion flair – especially when it’s a brand so many people are talking about. Ice Watches offer cool, bright, bold looks for the season in silicon straps, gel straps, vibrant colors and more. They retail for a “pick-me-up-one” price that starts at about $110 retail.
A Timely Event: Omega Watches Brings Space to Earth with Las Vegas Astronaut Forum and Exhibition
If you are going to be in Las Vegas next week—specifically from October 20-24th — you will not want to miss this amazing opportunity. Omega Watches and the Tourbillon Boutique (at City Center) in Vegas are presenting a Speedmaster Forum and exhibit that features Gemini and
Apollo astronauts in person, as well as incredible space artifacts and memorabilia from the famed space missions. Astronauts from the landmark Apollo and Gemini NASA programs will celebrate the exhibit at a public forum on Friday October 21 that will run from 1130 am to 1 pm at City Center. Attending the forum is Brigadier General Charlie Duke (who flew to the moon on Apollo 15), Lt. General Thomas Stafford (Gemini and Apollo astronaut), and Captain Gene Cernan (Apollo 17 astronaut, and the last man to walk on the moon. The forum and panel discussion is moderated by former CNN correspondent Miles O’Brien. The exhibition at the Tourbillon Boutique runs four days and is open to the public. It will showcase a Lunar Rover, an Apollo 10 space suit and a Mars Rover, in addition to other items. Also on exhibit will be several important Omega Speedmaster watches. The Omega Speedmaster is the only watch worn to the moon and on the moon, and is the official timepieces of the NASA space program. This is rare opportunity to get to see these pioneers of our time together in one room discussing their ventures and experiences. It is a must-attend mission!
Time Capsules: Urwerk Unveils the Torpedo Champagne – Let’s Toast to that!
Urwerk, an independent watch brand we’ve talked about here for its wonderful innovative looks and technology, has done it again – breaking out the hot new UR-110 ZrN Torpedo timepiece – in an edition of just 12 special pieces. The new Urwerk watch is built of high-tech materials indicative of only the most avant-garde watchmakers of today: Grade 5 titanium, with a bezel in 316L sandblasted stainless steel treated with Zirconium Nitride for a great frosted champagne color. This is definitely a watch to toast to, with its complex caliber movement, superb craftsmanship, and luscious looks. The 47x51x15mm watch houses the UR 9.01 self-winding caliber with a mono-metallic balance. It features revolving satellite complication for which Urwerk is so renowned. These revolving satellite cubes offer rotting hour and minute modules mounted on planetary gears. There is also a day/night indicator and an “oil change” (service) indicator. The watch is powered by dual turbines that are visible from the
transparent caseback. Numerals are SuperLuminova treated, for easy readability, even when under the influence of champagne – or in the dark.
Off the Cuff: Aspen One Watches – What Direction are you Going?
It’s fall – a wonderful time for the great outdoors. But don’t go out in the great wilderness without this Aspen One Chronograph … with built-in compass. This is one great timepiece. It’s hefty in size but not overbearing on the wrist. It is offered in steel and in gold, but the rose gold version gets me every time. This brand is relatively young, unveiled to the world just a few years ago when a Dutch Company acquired the worldwide rights to use the Aspen name for a new collection — Aspen Fine Jewelry and Watches. The Aspen One watch pays tribute to the grand city of Aspen and the Ajax Mountain. Each model is produced in a limited-edition of 3,214 pieces — matching the elevation from the base to the top of this landmark mountain of Aspen. Each Aspen One watch is engraved with the words: Elevation 3214’, and then the individual number of the elevation of the individual watch. Every Aspen One watch is Swiss-made, and features an orange number 4 (the color for prosperity for the Indians and
for safety in the mountains) on the dial, and is sold with a choice of straps that can be changed quickly thanks to a patented technique. What make the watch so cool and different (and large) is the fact that with the push of the orange button on the left side of the watch, the hunter-type case back open to reveal a stunning disk compass whose ring displays the name of Ajax Mountain and important places surrounding it. Also when the caseback is open, the automatic movement of the watch is visible via the sapphire caseback on the right. Each Aspen One watch retails for approximately $45,000 – a small price to pay for not getting lost in the wilderness, and for looking so cool and gadgety. It sure would have helped that couple in the MA corn maze this weekend that had to call 911 to help them find their way out!
