Off the Cuff: Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph

The iconic Royal Oak collection of timepieces from Audemars Piguet celebrates its 40th anniversary this year with much fanfare – including an entire new series of Royal Oak watches. The Royal Oak – designed virtually overnight by Gerald Genta for Audemars Piguet in 1972 – was the world’s first bold luxury sporty watch built in stainless steel. The watch, with its crisp design and big price point (for a steel watch) – was an immediate success. Today, the Royal Oak continues to steal hearts. This stunning chronograph houses the self-winding caliber 2385 and offers chronograph counters, hours, minutes and small seconds, as well as date indication. The silvered dial features the brand’s Grande Tapisserie pattern for an elegant appeal against the 18-karat rose gold case and hand-stitched large square-scale brown crocodile strap. The sapphire crystal is anti-reflective treatment and the watch features a screw-locked crown so it is water resistant to 50 meters.  A true eye catcher, this beauty retails for about $45,500.
